The neighbourhood around the cottage is one of countryside estates owned by members of one or two extended families. Everybody knows each other and is typical of any small village. Even though the proeprty itself does not have a sign pointing to it as "Casa da Lena" all the neighbours know the owners and can easily point to the direction and location of the property. Having said that there is total privacy on the property. The distances between homes are about fifty to one hundred metres apart and due to the dense vegetation in and around the surrounding properties a lot of peace, quiet and tranquility can be enjoyed. There are some small subsistence farming operations and organic agriculture in the area (a lot of kiwi fruits, for example, are grown nearby). A nice farmer's market operates on the weekends inthe twon village. The centre of the town village is about eight hundred metres away and can be accessed by foot in about ten to fifteen minutes.

Although there is quite a bit of nature trails to be followed in the area we would recommend a car to be hired as some of the best levada walks, albeit only a few minutes away, do have a steep incline or decline in areas. Madeira is mountainous with some awesome and spectacular valleys to behold, but unless you are a fit hiker you may not be able to wander up and down the hills with little effort.

Santo da Serra village itself is very flat and is home to what was the first major golf course in Madeira. The village also lent its name to the golf-course.
