Atouguia Villas: Location

Atouguia is the name of a "place", what some people might consider a suburb, in the civil parrish of Calheta which in turn is part of the municipality of Calheta (yes, the civil parrish and the municipality have the exact same name...). The idea of this being a "suburb" is actually wholly incorrect. Calheta is a mostly rural and agricultural type of area of Madeira - so nothing urban or "sub-urban" here. There is hardly no industry - save for the rum factory down the creek and the odd hotel here and there. What is left is mostly farmland and lots of untouched nature closer up to the mountains.

Calheta literally means "creek" in the Portuguese language. There are many prominent ravines that plunge and surge in the municiaplity giving it quite dramatic scenery. This makes for exciting eye-candy and adventurous car travel too!

Calheta is well known for its laid back style and time measured according to the harvest rythymns. Things go slow here. No need for rush. This is what appeals to most holiday makers. Then there is the excellent weather to boot.
